The jury's still out on Twitter (personally)

Richard Holway has a recent post: Are Twitters Twits? I wouldn't go that far - if it works for others great - but from a personal use perspective, Twitter hasn't really grafted itself to my lifestyle:workstyle yet.

Why is that? These are the reasons, so far...

  • I'm a laptop/email/desktop rss centric person, not a mobile phone centric person
  • I don't spend too much time travelling, so don't have corresponding downtime to Twitter
  • I'm never too far away from an RSS reader and get my updates through that
  • A lot of my day job is on confidential client projects, or doing people reviews and stuff, so not great raw material for Twittering
  • Other people do a better job of circulating the news onto Twitter, so why try and compete?
  • Surely, no-one really wants to read that I'm about to shutdown and join the traffic, do they?

Where I have found it useful?

I follow a couple of A-list folk which isn't very useful, because I follow their blogs anyway, however most of the people I'm following work in our own company, but because of roles or geography I simply don't get to check in with them very often. Twitter is a great, passive way for me to stay in touch in a loosely coupled fashion, without having to try too hard.

Jeff James however has recommended following Ana Marie Cox's snarky Twitter commentary (that would be Snitters?) on the US election. Twitter seems perfect for the medium. Most of the jokes will wash over me but I'll sign up and see if it wins me over.
