For another hundred they'll call my mother for me every Sunday

One of the keys to success in blogging is commenting on other people's blogs, which is why I am not a successful blogger.* As I've taken on more projects within and without Metia I've gotten awful at commenting on other people's blogs. It's all I can do to read them, much less come up with something intelligent to add to the conversation.

Well, Darren Rowse at ProBlogger has delivered the genie lamp that will solve all of my problems.** A new service call Buy Blog Comments employs a phalanx of gnomes who will find blogs in my niche and leave (presumably) witty and insightful comments on them with backlinks to my own blog.

"We dont use people who cant even speak english," proprietor Jon Warass assures us on Buy Blog Comments' Web site, boldly scorning the use of punctuation and capitalization. He also says that "We specialize in selling blog comments for blackhatters," which was the term we used to refer to malicious hackers when I was in IT. I'm assuming that in this context it means unethical marketers?

Look, I find the quick fix as attractive as the next person. But building up a positive reputation by carrying on worthwhile conversations with bloggers is just one of those things you can't outsource, however time consuming it may be. Rowse also points out that these services tend to get out of hand, with hundreds of spam comments turning into tens and hundreds of thousands. Furthermore, as comment spam proliferates bloggers are using more and better tools to fight it. It's a losing game all around.

I think you either do the work of commenting yourself or don't do it at all, and return the phalanx of gnomes to their proper place as charmingly dotty lawn statuary.

*That and my inability to wrap text around an image. Lick those two problems and I'm totally A-list material.

**That is, all of my problems related to commenting on blogs. The rest can be resolved with a briefcase full of unmarked bills, a small but fanatically loyal private army, a time machine, and a margarita. Also a monkey.***

***In fact, just the monkey and the margarita will take care of most things.

In this case, I'm not sure the purpose of buying comments is for conversation or networking, but strictly SEO reasons.

You can wrap text around image with the css attribute float:left or float:right.

Now you're A-list!

Scot,

Thanks! I'll try not to let it go to my head. :-)

On reflection I think you're right.
