Playing with the Microsoft brand: from blue monsters to pretty anime girls

In my last post I talked about the Blue Monster of Microsoft, created by cartoonist Hugh MacLeod and, reportedly, adopted by a growing number of employees as a mascot.

This morning I learned about the weird phenomenon of the OS-tans - various computer operating systems represented as Japanese cartoon characters, usually pretty girls. For example, here's a short video of Windows XP displaying her...um...assets? Liabilities? (Whether her large chest represents a feature-rich interface or huge memory requirements is apparently up for debate.)

Now this is an interesting contrast: a mascot created by one A-lister vis-a-vis mascots created by a community of fans.
