Its knock PR week

I like to post links to blogs complaining about bad practice and annoying or dubious behaviour in PR. I do it because intelligent criticism is healthy. Point out what people are doing wrong and they'll start doing it right. I also do it because the practice of PR is changing radically. Sharing information helps accelerate everyone's knowledge.

As a result I have a high pain threshold for listening to criticism of PR. Although even this has been tested recently.

During the past week there have been a plethora of connected posts critical of PR. Here's a few from Guy Kawasaki, Jeremiah Owyang and Dave McClure.

All of which, frankly, was a bit too much for me to digest in one sitting.

Maybe its jetlag? I just returned from a week with around 250 PR managers from 50 countries, and the people I met seemed knowledgeable about the mechanics of their industry, sensitive to the needs of their audiences and respective of the requirements of their local press. This experience somewhat contradicted the ranting comments accumulating online.

Perhaps I should start a thread on what's wrong with... [insert lawyers, civil servants, plumbers, software developers, seal cullers, etc...].

Luckily, Andy Lark provides a more intelligent response here.

I picked up on exactly this '<a href="http://thefriendlyghost.wordpress.com/2007/05/29/why-does-everyone-hate-pr-even-pr-people/">wave of PR antipathy</a>' too! Fortunately we have Brian Holis to add some much-need balance to this debate - see link at bottom of my article.

hey steve -

actually, my post was in response to the post on guy's blog (by Margie Fisher)... i was just trying to provide some balance to the article by Margie. and indeed, i did caveat that there are several knowledgeable folks in PR... however, a lot of PR people don't seem to be terribly savvy about blogs & social media.

anyway, hopefully there's a balanced perspective based on the entirety of the conversations from all folks involved.
